In this week's reading, Serravallo addresses reading comprehension through the lens of during reading and after reading writing activities. During reading activities capture evidence of student thinking informally throughout the reading process (such as through sticky-note jots and reader's notebook entries). Reading conferences would also be another great source of information to gain insight into student comprehension. After reading, whole-book comprehension can be assessed through writing responses (as illustrated in the text) or other activities that support students to identify and synthesize key details in relation to core reading elements (such as character/plot/theme development).
For this module, you will analyze two of Alex's reading response entries from his reading notebook. I recommend using the book while you complete the analysis for helpful reminders on locating and interpreting the evidence. Download the student sample and Analysis Sheet to get started.
