Supporting dual Language Learners
In this module, we will review key practices for supporting English Language Learners and take a closer look at how these practices are enacted in the ELA classroom. The brief Prezi looks at three practices central to building background knowledge--all of which we've explored in our own lesson planning. The following application exercise includes teaching scenarios that utilize these practices in order to help you identify and evaluate how well ELL students might be supported in those classrooms. Finally, the module activity asks you to go one step further by exploring those practices within the context of full lessons either through observation or analysis of text. There is SO much more to learn about supporting English Language Learners, but our goals are for you to (a) understand what these particular practices are; (b) why they make a difference; (c) and how to apply them.
Part 1: Reviewing key concepts
This Prezi includes narration so be sure to have your sound turned on :)
PArt 2: Applying key concepts
This activity is a follow-up to the Prezi above. As you read each teaching scenario, pay close attention to the three strategies we discussed (they are listed in the activity rubric as strategies 7, 8 and 9. After reading through the scenario, your goal is to evaluate how well the teacher employed those strategies in order to support ELLs in their classroom. I highly encourage you to try this on your own, then you can compare your findings to the authors' discussion. This practice is meant to help you apply the concepts to teaching situations--you don't need to submit anything :)

Part 3: Evaluating key concepts in practice
For this module, you should choose one of the following activities to complete. When you have finished, be sure to upload your completed note-taking document to the forum on Canvas by Friday at 8:00 pm.
I Spy.... in the Classroom
This activity asks you to observe practices at your practicum site to give you a "real world" perspective of what these dimensions look like when enacted. It may also be better to choose this option if you have ELL students in your classroom. ![]()

I Spy.... in the Lesson
This activity asks you to focus on dimensions of practice in the context of a lesson plan series. It may be better to choose this option if you are not currently working with ELL students or if you would like to 'see' these practices integrated in writing. ![]()
