Foundations of reading
While the broad discussion of formative assessment applies to all literacy instruction, there are also a number of specific informal reading assessments essential to reading development. These assessments are meant to be conducted one-on-one in a classroom setting (between a teacher and student) and typically draw on authentic reading activities. Examining a number of assessments can help to construct a reader profile to better understand an individual reader's strengths and areas for growth.
These assessments are covered in greater detail during weekly sessions (throughout EDUC 420). Additional resources are also typically included in most assigned texts and are readily searchable online. The following video offers a brief sampling.

Optional: For a close-up look at sample student assessments, explore the Assessment Workshop page. This works best if you have the companion text, Literacy Teacher's Playbook by J. Serravallo. But even without the text, you can still download the student samples to see what student evidence might look like in response to these common assessments.
